Projects
Tourism Development and Resilience Growth Project (TDRGP), The Gambia – World Bank
Tourism is one of the most important sectors in The Gambia, contributing significantly to employment, foreign exchange earnings, and national GDP. However, the sector faces multiple challenges, including climate vulnerability, coastal erosion, overdependence on limited tourism destinations, and the economic impacts of global crises such as COVID-19. The project was established to address these structural weaknesses by: Strengthening tourism governance and institutional capacity; Diversifying tourism attractions beyond traditional coastal tourism; Supporting tourism-related Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs); Improving access to financing and technical assistance for tourism operators; Enhancing environmental sustainability and coastal protection; Promoting climate-resilient tourism infrastructure and destination management. The project adopts an inclusive development approach by integrating gender-responsive policies, community participation, and private-sector engagement. It also seeks to increase the competitiveness of The Gambia as a tourism destination while protecting natural and cultural assets.
Sierra Leone Economic Diversification Project (SLEDP)
Sierra Leone’s economy has historically relied heavily on mining activities, making the country vulnerable to commodity price fluctuations and external economic shocks. SLEDP was introduced to promote economic diversification and create more sustainable and inclusive growth opportunities. The project is implemented under the Ministry of Finance, with key collaboration from: Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs; Ministry of Trade and Industry; Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (SMEDA); Bank of Sierra Leone and other public institutions. The project operates through several major components: Business Environment and Capacity Building Focuses on regulatory reforms, investment climate improvement, and strengthening institutional effectiveness. SMEs and Entrepreneurship Support Provides technical, advisory, and financial support for small businesses and entrepreneurs. Tourism and Public Goods Investment Invests in tourism infrastructure and services to attract private-sector participation. Project Management and Emergency Response Supports implementation, monitoring, coordination, and contingency response mechanisms. The project particularly addresses barriers such as weak governance systems, poor entrepreneurship ecosystems, inadequate infrastructure, and low technical capacity.
World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Project Across Africa
WIPO’s initiatives across Africa focus on helping countries build effective intellectual property frameworks that support innovation, entrepreneurship, technology transfer, and cultural industries. These projects typically involve: Capacity building for intellectual property offices; Training for entrepreneurs, innovators, researchers, and creators; Development of patent, trademark, and copyright systems; Support for small and medium enterprises (SMEs); Promotion of innovation ecosystems and digital transformation; Strengthening legal and institutional IP frameworks. WIPO collaborates with: National governments; Universities and research institutions; African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO); African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI); Creative and innovation sectors. The projects also support African innovators in commercializing local innovations and protecting indigenous knowledge and creative works.
